The Friends is an organisation run by the parents. All parents are automatically members when their children join the school. A committee, including representatives from each class and a chairperson, meets once a month in the Head’s Study.

The Friends is primarily an organisation for parents to meet each other at social events, and some of the activities raise money for the school. There is an annual general meeting (combined with a school parents’ evening) held in the autumn term. The Friends arrange a summer fête and the children’s Christmas parties. It also usually arranges two social events, such as an informal one in the spring and a party in the summer term. The Friends also organise second-hand uniform sales.

Other activities of a support nature are also undertaken by the Friends, such as class address lists which are produced and distributed early in the autumn term. A telephone ‘cascade system’ is also produced, to be used in the event, say, of the school being closed without warning, such as in extreme weather conditions. Any parent, who does not wish their details to be circulated, must inform the School Office in writing by the first week of term.

The rôle of the Friends, however, is not static, but evolves to meet the changing needs of the children, the parents and the school. The Friends of Shrewsbury Lodge is not a Parent Teacher Association.
